My name is Gordon Bambridge, Norfolk bred and born, I am married with three daughters who all live in Norfolk at the moment. One is a silversmith making custom and designer jewellery with a workshop and retail premises in Elm Hill in Norwich. One trades on the internet and has premises in Swaffham. The third has recently qualified and is working in PR and promotions in Norwich.
I have spent most of my life in commerce mainly supplying the Horticultural Industry, which enabled me to travel all over the UK and on occasions abroad. I often combined these trips with speaking after Dinners and in Churches across Europe and the USA
I still trade in Antiques, where, having relinquished my shop, I can be found at various fairs and on the internet. I specialise in Coins and Military Buttons and Badges, but also buy and sell jewellery and interesting bits. I am always amazed by what people offer to sell, its great for anyone who has the slightest interest in History.
As a councillor, I started in the early 1990’s as a parish councillor, mainly to be able to comment on planning matters in our village with a bit more authority. I stood for Breckland in 1999 and was unsuccessful, but at a retry in 2003 I was elected to Eynsford Ward with a majority of just 6 votes, then with increasing majorities in 2007 and 2011 with well over 300 majority. I think I am a hard working councillor and currently at Breckland, I was appointed to the Council Cabinet and I am currently exec member for Growth, which means planning and housing, of course I attend the Full Council and Cabinet plus many other meetings. I am now elected as member for the Upper Wensum Ward. This is a two person ward and incorporates some 15 villages including the 5 I have represented since 2003. I am elected with Bill Borrett and we share responsibility.
One of the highlights of my time as a councillor was the year I spent as Chairman of the Council. It is an honour and privilege to be selected to this post and involves travelling around and representing Breckland as first citizen of the district, including a visit to Buckingham Palace.
In addition to council membership, I am a political member of the Norfolk Rivers Internal Drainage Board for the last thirteen years. When I joined it was really just the Wensum and its tributaries. I also have an ongoing interest in the Wensum as former chairman of the Wensum Valley Project, which became the Wensum Valley Trust, now unfortunately defunct with pressure on finances. We really should all learn to value the Wensum more than we do. Did you know for example it’s the only river in England with an SSSI status for its entire length, and the only one in Europe as a SAC for its entire length. That is special!
I am committed to community involvement and am looking forward to continuing to serve as a district councillor.
During my life I have always been involved in volunteering in many forms, I used to run a youth club, been involved in Lunch Clubs and other pensioners groups, I spent 13 years as a Special Constable in Dereham and so on. I am a practicing Christian, regularly involved in services locally. I am involved for more than 30 years in the Christian Businessmen’s Organisation (FGB Norwich) which is a active in over 160 countries, and still attend some of their events. I am now serving the Norwich Chapter and write the monthly prayer letter.
For several years I was Show Secretary for the Norfolk and Norwich Horticultural Society organising four seasonal shows in the County each year, the biggest being the Flower Show at the Royal Norfolk Show. This event used to take three weeks of my life each year, now it’s two days of pleasure, and yes, you will find me there on the last Wednesday/Thursday of June each year. I now also take part as a Judge for Norwich In Bloom. I was pleased this year to be invited to judge a local allotment society plot(s)
Jacqueline and I love to walk in our delightful countryside, she tends my (neglected by me) garden, whilst I sit in it, we have a few hens, cats and occasionally other animals so early rising is essential. My other main hobby is reading, local bookshops and charity stores are always pleased to see me come in. I like fact, history and biography, but increasingly as I get older, novels and thrillers. Tom Clancy, John Grisham and Tess Gerritson at the moment.
To be concluded…….
